What are the advantages of Web3? This time, even the top stream organization of the crypto world was asked

Recently, Marc Andreessen, a star investor of a16z, was "resented" because he failed to answer the specific advantages of Web3 for some industries. Relevant videos have been widely circulated in the industry. This institution is one of the most influential funds in the field of crypto venture capital in the world. It is also known as the "preacher" of the industry for its strong investment style in the field of Web3 and its fast running horse enclosure. The video shows that economist and blogger Tyler Cowen had an in-depth exchange with Andreessen in a podcast program on "the specific advantages of Web3 for podcasts", "why Web3 can become a better podcast", "what is the key difference between traditional and Web3 podcasts".

In the face of these very specific questions, the answer given by this VC tycoon is a grand vision, which is obviously not the original intention of the questioner. Coincidentally, as an expert in the field of Web3, Packy McCormick encountered a similar situation not long ago. In a live broadcast, he was asked to give an overview of the future of blockchain mortgage loans. The leading-edge expert who has invested in more than 10 defi (decentralized Finance) projects said helplessly after a series of questions: "I don't know", and the scene was once very embarrassing. As a matter of fact, although Web3 has become very popular this year and a large number of capital and talents are pouring in, Web3 is still at a very early stage in many specific issues, such as what the interface with the real world is and how to implement the application. There have been many debates in the academic and investment circles.

The fact that these two top investors were "hated" also deepened our further thinking on relevant issues. Recently, a dialogue video between Andreessen, a top investor in Web3, and Cowen, a blogger, has been widely circulated in the industry. A16z is regarded by the investment circle as an investment magic line in the field of Web3. During the period, it invested in a large number of star enterprises, such as Facebook, twitter, instagram, airbnb, etc., and made a lot of money. After the beginning of Web3, a16z decisively entered this field and became famous by betting on the success of coinbase.

According to relevant media reports, a16z has made a net profit of more than 7 billion US dollars from its investment in coinbase alone, and this company has also invested in several blockchain head projects including opensea, dappelabs and uniswap. A Google executive commented on a16z: "it's like a madman, who puts a domineering foot in every transaction." It can be seen that this upstart in the investment community is domineering and vigorous in the field of Web3. For this reason, every public appearance of Andreessen has attracted the attention of the industry and even the public who are concerned about Web3. This on-line roadshow is not too much.

However, Andreessen's performance obviously did not meet expectations. In this intercepted video conversation, we can see that Cowen asked Andreessen a series of questions, such as: what are the specific advantages of Web3 for podcasting? Why is Web3 a better podcast?. In his reply, Andreessen maintained his consistent confidence and rapid speed of speech. But facing Cowen's very specific questions one after another, his answers are usually composed of grand and vague terms. For example, he said, "I hope that in five years' time, there will be these flourishing Web3 podcast environments, which will be open & hellip; & hellip; (Web3) will monetize by creating unique digital assets for sales and transactions in completely different ways.".

Cowen does not accept such a grand narrative, but tries to choose some that can be directly perceived There are even some sharp entry points to ask: "is it easier to make small payments by using the traditional method of podcasting and Web3 method of podcasting? For example, it is easier to sell T-shirts by using NFT mode than by using signature T-shirts? To me, this market does not sound very large and accounts for a very small percentage of GDP.". Andreessen's answer to this is not very smooth: "however, the income of newspapers, magazines and podcasts itself contributes very little to GDP, and these small incomes are very important.

”He avoided Cowen's question and did not list convincing cases. Such an expert, when discussing with the questioner Weinberg on "real estate transaction based on blockchain" in another recent dialogue, was asked at a loss. According to the video, the latter repeatedly asked McCormick: what makes this blockchain version better than the current web2 solution, and what is the role of smart contracts?. Surprisingly, after several rounds of discussions, McCormick reluctantly admitted that he was asked about the mortgage loan because "I never thought about this issue before".

Some public critics of Web3 said that this happened because the interviewer gave McCormick and Andreessen nowhere to hide their arguments. "The interviewer asked very simple and rational questions, and the interviewee could not answer these questions without abstract language, which just proves the emptiness and abstraction of Web3.". In fact, although Web3 is one of the few investment hotspots this year, the related discussions and controversies have never stopped. In the communication with each reporter, many investors also expressed that the landing of Web3 needs to be combined with cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other racetracks to produce applications that truly meet the core needs of mass users.

Tim oreilly, who once defined web2, wrote that cryptocurrency is likely to be the future of finance, but considering that there are so many smogs, it is difficult to see what is really effective at present. Cryptocurrency supporter a16z has made a series of investments in games, decentralized finance, NFT and decentralized social networks. These cases do not focus on the utility of what they create, but only on the possibility of making their investors and creators rich. "In Web3, we don't want to understand how to connect with the existing legal and commercial mechanisms. This is a sharp contrast with previous generations of networks & hellip; & hellip; if Web3 is to become a general financial system or a decentralized trust general system, it needs to develop a strong interface with the real world, its legal system and operating economy.

”。 Of course, this does not mean that Web3 has no real opportunities except for financial speculation. We can also see that a large number of start-ups are actively making various attempts around the relevant tracks, including polium one, which is recently called the "world's first NFT game console". On the road of rapid development, bullish and negative usually go hand in hand. No matter what the result is, it will definitely leave us something. As oreilly said, Web3 still has too many things to create. We should pay more attention to the part of the vision that has nothing to do with instant wealth, focus on solving problems in trust, identity and decentralized finance, and most importantly, focus on the interface between cryptocurrency and the real world people live in.
